Reading has somehow become something of a rare indulgence in my life. I once cried before boarding a plane because I suddenly realized I didn't have a book, and flights were my big chance to read! These days I hardly even allow myself to read on planes, unless there's no wifi for work. However, I absolutely LOVE reading. I've read and/or rediscovered some great books this year, so I thought I'd share my best-of list for the year with you!Read More
Like most hair-loving females, I've tried a lot of different products and tools over the years. Have you heard that your hair is like a garden? It's a beautiful analogy because the hair is alive & it can be nurtured & groomed or totally wild, left to the whims of the elements. I'm all for the natural look, but some regular love & maintenance is a worthy investment, since you do wear your hair every day! Here are some of my favorite basics that I hope you might enjoy too.
WIDU Paddle Brush. It just feels so nice to brush your hair with this over and over. Start on the ends and gradually move up to scalp, as the ends are detangled. Once all hair is detangled, you can use more pressure as you turn the brushing into a nice scalp massage. Flip your head over and brush scalp & hair the opposite direction for a minute, then all to the right, then all to the left. Your natural oils will be nicely distributed, your scalp stimulated, and your hair shinier.
Ibiza Round Brush. It's lightweight cork handle is easy to hold & maneuver & the bristles give your hair beautiful shine. Use with blow dryer.
Beautycounter Shampoo & Conditioner. It's called "Daily Shampoo" and "Daily Conditioner" which I believe is massively understating how incredible these two items are. First of all, Beautycounter products are made from the best of the best non-toxic ingredients, which do not include over 1500 common beauty industry components that are on the BC "Never List."
The shampoo is gentle yet very clarifying and leaves no residue. The conditioner is rich, silky, detangling, yet not heavy & does not coat your hair. Both have a delightful citrus scent. I never would have dreamed that a makeup & skincare company could make one shampoo and one conditioner and that they could be this incredible and so perfect for just about everyone! Love.
Let me know if you try any of these & what you think! Happy hair-gardening!
Our skin is our largest organ. Everything we put on our bodies gets absorbed into our bloodstream which means we need to be as vigilant about our skincare as we are about our food. Some people can use mainstream (read: toxic) products and not notice an immediate (or even gradual) connection to the negative side effects, but that doesn't mean they're not building up gradually. It's almost a blessing when you're skin or body is "sensitive" so that you know sooner!
Shortly after my college years, I had a sudden onset of "sensitivities" and my eyes were opened to the potentially harmful nature of many foods, products, and substances around me that I had grown up thinking were safe, or even good! Daily we are exposed to environmental toxins that are beyond our control, so I feel like the best bet is to make wise, informed choices whenever we can.
Here are some of my favorites for your skin:
White Tiger Serum: This serum is crafted by Alexandra Wagner, a fantastic eco-estitician in Venice, CA. I just love everything about it. It's beautiful, the pump works perfectly, the serum smells lovely in a very light way, feels luxurious going on, and really soothes my skin. It might feel pricey at $140 but the bottle lasts for months. To add to the loveliness, the maker is also a painter. The label image is one of her original works, inspired by the white turmeric & tiger grass stem cell ingredients.
Beautycounter Lengthening Mascara: Makeup is one of the most challenging categories for finding non-toxic options that actually perform as well as the mainstream competition. Over the years, I've purchased so many "clean" makeup products only to sneak back to the MAC, Dior, & Armani counters for my old favorites. Beautycounter has revolutionized that scenario & this mascara is different. While it is not super thickening like the runway-ready DiorShow Black Out, it is, like the name says, lengthening. The application is smooth & clean. It's build-able too, if you wait a moment between each coat. I do about 3-4 coats. It comes in classic black and is beautiful for an everyday I was born with these long lashes look, and with a clean ingredient list, it's one less area to worry about your toxic load!
NOW Almond Oil: One note on that BC Mascara - it wears like something between waterproof and regular, which is great because it stays on well, but it's challenging because you do need to remove it every night. Enter this delightfully basic Almond Oil: It's simple, pure, won't clog your pores, and gently removes all of your eye makeup. I recommend using this oil on a cotton round or tissue before you wash your face each night. It doubles as a great dilution base for all of you essential oil lovers out there!
Airplane Travel Tip: take a pile of cotton rounds & pour a little almond oil on each one. Squish them together in a small zip-lock and you have pre-loaded eye makeup remover pads ready to go, without having to squeeze another liquid bottle into your quart-size ziplock bag!
Beautycounter Rosewater Spray: Okay, I know I mention Beautycounter a lot, but it has become one of my favorite brands. With a Never List of 1500 mainstream ingredients that they do not use and beauty-industry experts fueling the creation of top-performing products, it's a go-to resource. I can't wait for their product range to grow to fill even more product needs! I've been a fan of rosewater sprays for years. There were ones at the natural grocery stores, but the ingredients and sources were not listed and it kind of smelled like candy. Then I tried some home-batch varieties sold at charming eco-friendly spots, but the potency varied & faded. I can reach for this Rosewater knowing that it's safe & pure. It hydrates & refreshes your skin with the perfect ultra-fine misting pump. It's a toner, it sets makeup, & who doesn't like the smell of a rose? Try it right after the shower, after makeup application, when you get home from work, or on your pillow before bed: you'll love it!
